Oh Dark Continent

by Kumkum Ramchandani
I lived in your darkness
Swirled in the empty rivers
Felt the despair of mothers
The crying of infants
Your desperate bareness
Like a mother with no milk
In her hanging teats
Crying children hungry for love
Your men have soulless eyes
With no hope in their bones
With no lilt in their steps
With no life in their hearts
You come alive
In the dark nights
With juju music and Fela Kuti
Singing of dissent
In the dawn of day
The hopelessness returns
The sweat of despair
The stench of rottenness
Corruption, deceit and greed
Rule the daily grind
The mewling of hungry children
Becomes the rhythm of life
You eat bread and yam
Open tins of sardines
Drink water crawling with worms
Dogs die with crusted eyes
Oh dark continent
When will salvation come?
When will the waters gush again?
When will the birds sing?
